Eminent TLAD Alumna Speaks in Dubai
It is with great delight that we can announce an event at the American University in Dubai that brings together two Department of Teaching + Learning in Art + Design alumnae - Saba Quizilbash (MA 2004) and Salima Hasmi (MA) 1990. Saba, who is an adjunct faculty member in American University's Department of Visual Communication invited Salima to give a presentation there entitled "Art and Activism in Contemporary Pakistani Art" on March 19th. Professor Hashmi is an artist, educator, curator and writer who taught and was eventually appointed as Principal at the National College of Art, Lahore. Subsequently, she became the founding Dean of the School of Visual Art and Design at National University. Professor Hashmi is highly respected in Pakistan and internationally and she is the author of numerous books including "Unveiling the Visible: Lives and Works of Women Artists of Pakistan (2001). She co-authored with Indian art historian Yashodhara Dalmia "Memory, Metaphor, Mutations: Contemporary Art of India and Pakistan published by Oxford University Press (2006) and her most recent book "The Eye Still Seeks" a collection of essays on contemporary artists from Pakistan was published just this year.
What is additionally intriguing about this story is that it is a fascinating example of "6 Degrees of Separation;" as Professor Hashmi and Dr. Paul Sproll, Head of RISD's Department of Teaching + Learning in Art + Design both trained as art educators at the Bath Academy of Art in Corsham, England. Also, Saba, while at the National College of Art, was a student of Professor Hashmi's and while at RISD was a graduate student of Dr. Sproll's.
