MA Alum is High School's First Muralist-in-Residence

Munir Mohammed (MA '99) completed a high successful year in June as the William M. Davies Jr. Career & Technical High School's muralist-in-residence. The mural, which illustrates the school's science curriculum is now the second created at the school. The mural came about as the result of a longstanding relationship developed over the years between the Rhode Island School of Design's (RISD's) Department of Teaching + Learning in Art + Design (TLAD) and its public engagement initiative Project Open Door (POD).

The first mural completed last year and in just one semester was based on the school's motto: Respect - Responsibility - Ready to Succeed. For this even more ambitious mural, Munir became muralist-in-residence at Davies throughout the 2014-2015 academic year. As a result of their participation in the after-school activity and working under the supervision of Munir, it was determined that the Davies students would be able to provide evidence that they were able to:

1. Collaborate with peers and a professional artist in the design and completion of a mural for the school that responds to a theme agreed upon by the school community and approved by the school’s Director. 2. Contribute ideas and sketches for the mural, which are further refined by the professional artist. 3. Contribute to the development and completion of the mural working as “apprentice artists” under the supervision of the professional artist.
